Mobile Carrier Activation (SIM/eSIM Setup)

This is the basic track to check when choosing a phone number, SIM/eSIM, prepaid/postpaid plan, roaming, or a budget carrier (알뜰폰) in Korea. Whether a foreigner can sign up, which documents to submit, whether identity verification is possible, and whether you can switch plans all depend on the carrier and dealer, your residency status, and the registration status of lines under your own name.

• Confirm that it is an official carrier store, an official online shop, an official airport booth, or an official budget-carrier (알뜰폰) channel.
• Required documents such as a passport, Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증), a domestic contact, and a payment method differ by provider, so check before you visit.
• Confirm whether the line is activated under your own name, and whether the name registered with the carrier matches your alien registration information.
• Check in writing or on the app screen the following: prepaid/postpaid, contract terms, early-termination penalties, data allowance, whether voice/text are included, the validity period, the recharge method, and cancellation conditions.
• For eSIM, check whether your device supports it, the compatibility of domestic/overseas models, and the reissue conditions.
